Demonstrators run riot in Iranian Kurdish city
TEHRAN, Aug 2 (AFP) -
20h21 - Demonstrators
ran riot in a mainly Kurdish city in Iran, attacking official
buildings and setting vehicles ablaze on Monday, Kurdish leaders
said Tuesday.
The violence took place in Sanandaj, the main city in Iranian
Kurdistan, near the border with Iraq, but no casualties were
reported.
The official IRNA news agency said four cars had been set on
fire and a bank attacked.
Last month, six people, including four Iranian soldiers, were
killed in unrest in Kurdish areas near the Turkish border, with
the with the interior ministry blaming Kurdish rebels from
Turkey's Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Violent clashes also erupted lastweek in Mahabad following the
death of a young man after his arrest by police, amid accusations
he had been tortured.
About seven percent of Iran's population is Kurdish.
